Middle School: Curriculum
Middle School Curriculum
At Oakstone Academy Middle School, we combine the best of research-based traditional instruction with innovative, hands-on learning experiences. This approach provides students with a strong academic foundation in reading and math, while keeping learning exciting and engaging through multiple modalities and real-life applications.
Our curriculum emphasizes academic excellence while fostering social growth and character development. Small classrooms, with 14 to 19 students, are supported by a licensed teacher and an assistant, creating a low student-to-teacher ratio that allows for personalized instruction. This environment enables students to progress at their own pace while remaining challenged and supported by teachers who guide them individually or in small groups. Our classrooms are particularly well-suited for gifted students, who can move quickly through the curriculum without leaving the comfort and camaraderie of their same-age peers. The emphasis on active participation ensures that every student is engaged and learning throughout the day.
Foreign Language Instruction:
Middle school students at Oakstone Academy receive instruction in Spanish, introducing them to a second language at an age when cognitive flexibility is at its peak. Learning a foreign language early enhances problem-solving skills, memory, and communication abilities, while also cultivating cultural awareness and global perspectives that prepare students for success in a diverse and interconnected world.
Music Education: Band and Choir:
Students are also offered participation in band and choir, which provides valuable opportunities for creative expression, teamwork, and discipline. Music education has been shown to enhance cognitive development, improve focus, and build confidence. By performing individually and collaboratively, students develop leadership skills, strengthen their sense of community, and experience the joy of artistic achievement.
Character Education and Leadership:
Character education and leadership development are embedded into daily learning. Students learn the importance of respect, responsibility, and collaboration, ensuring they grow not only academically, but socially and emotionally. Opportunities for leadership begin as early as third grade, with students able to participate on the Student Leadership Team, developing confidence, teamwork skills, and a sense of responsibility to their school community.
Arts, Physical Education, Health, and Cyber Civics:
Alongside character education, middle school students engage in visual arts, physical education, health, and Cyber Civics. Visual arts encourage creativity, problem-solving, and self-expression, allowing students to explore ideas in innovative ways. Physical education promotes healthy habits, teamwork, and physical fitness, while health classes teach students essential skills for making informed decisions about wellness, nutrition, and personal safety. Cyber Civics prepares students to navigate the digital world responsibly, teaching digital citizenship, online safety, and ethical technology use—skills that are increasingly essential for both academic and personal success.
Experiential Learning and Community Engagement:
Learning at Oakstone Academy Middle School extends far beyond the classroom. Field trips, community partnerships, and in-school programs—bring the curriculum to life and provide meaningful, hands-on experiences that reinforce classroom learning.
At Oakstone Academy Middle School, we are committed to educating the whole child—intellectually, socially, emotionally, and creatively—while inspiring a love of learning that lasts a lifetime. Our students leave with not only strong academic foundations but also the confidence, skills, and curiosity to thrive in middle school, high school, and beyond.
